Vitamin C 23% Suspension | The Ordinary

It’s been a few months since I posted about my mini skin care haul from The Ordinary.

So far I’ve been able to review the azelaic acid and the lactic acid products and I feel like it’s time to report back on how the Vitamin C Suspension and I have been faring.

I have a lot of items in my skin care basket, but vitamin C was one of the key skin care ingredients that I haven’t tried until now.

Benefits of Vitamin C & Product Details

Vitamin C is an antioxidant prized for its abilities to reduce the signs of ageing while brightening the skin and reducing skin discolourations. 2% hyaluronic acid is included in the formula to boost skin’s moisture retention and combat the potentially drying effects of the high vitamin C content.

As per the website, this vitamin C suspension is water free, silicone free, alcohol free, oil free, nut free, vegan and cruelty free.

The suspension includes L-Ascorbic Acid powder within the suspension formula. The high potency of the formula may cause tingling on the skin for the first few uses until the skin builds up tolerance. It can be applied in the AM or PM (trust me, PM is better…) and is not to be used with niacinamide to avoid ingredient conflicts.

I’ve read other reviews that complain about a “metallic” smell to the suspension, but I haven’t noticed this myself.

Application and First Impressions

Initial thoughts? The vitamin C suspension comes in a squeezable tube in the form of a white cream that is slightly runny in consistency. Based on the texture of this cream, I definitely prefer to apply it at night; it doesn’t fully absorb into my skin and the greasy texture it leaves behind doesn’t go away until washed.

This treatment is definitely not good for wearing under makeup, unless you’re going for that “I moisturize with Vaseline” kind of look.

What I also find really annoying is that some of the suspension builds up or “pills” on my fingertips. I’m not sure if this is because of the powder particles included in it, but I hate that I have to wash this build-up off my fingertips after I apply it.

I only experienced some mild tingling during the first few applications and nothing thereafter (although I have the skin of a rhino, so I’m not surprised.) The L-Ascorbic powder in the suspension does feel slightly gritty on the skin as you spread the suspension, but not uncomfortable.

The Verdict?

I haven’t had any negative reactions to the suspension and I feel like my skin has looked better (smoother, plumper, more clear and even) since I started using it. Again, I hate the residue build-up I get after applying it, but I feel like it’s a small issue to deal with considering the low price point for this highly coveted antioxidant.

That being said, I’d still love to try out another Vitamin C cream or serum for comparison purposes in the future (because what beauty blogger is satisfied trying just one product?).

If you’re interested, I’ve also reviewed the Lactic Acid 10% and Azelaic Acid 10% on the blog, as well as the Niacinamide 10%  from the brand as well.

  1. I’ve heard so many mixed reviews on this cream. Tbh the pilling and texture of it are too unappealing for me to want to try it :/ I’ve been using drunk elephant’s vitamin c serum lately and have been really liking it 🙂

  2. You’re not the only one who has experienced the pilling with this moisturizer, that seems to be the general complain about it. I am with Mili, the texture and the way this pills turns me off and I won’t be purchasing this at all.
