Just from reading the title of this post, I know a lot of you are probably reacting with an “eewww”, since the thought of applying foundation with your fingers is, at first, slightly horrifying to most.
I had this same gut reaction when I watched some of my favourite beauty YouTubers doing as much; I believe there was a noticeable cringe from me when I first saw this application technique.
However, after seeing a few of them apply their foundation this way, including a number of makeup artists, I decided it was time to try this technique out myself and now I’m mad I waited so long. #whydidiwait
Why should you apply foundation with your fingers? Well…
-Rubbing the foundation between your fingers helps to warm up the product so it blends better and melts into the skin
-Fingers are great at applying just the right amount of pressure to fully massage the product in
-Fingers can get into spots a brush/sponge might not be able to, like the curves of your nose and between your eyebrows
-I don’t get any caking or excess foundation build-up using this method – everything gets massaged in or wiped away
-I can build up flawless coverage without getting any caking or build-up, which I never could do with my brush or sponge
-I use less product when I apply it with my fingers
-It’s fast and easy!
I honestly feel like using your fingers is one of the best ways to apply foundation! It gives me the most amazing skin-like finish that I never could achieve with my sponge.
Be aware though, that different foundations may or may not work well with this method and lightweight foundations may work better with fingers than thicker formulas (although my Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer works well with fingers too, despite the thickness).
So far, I’ve been using my fingers to blend out my Maybelline Fit Me Hydrate + Smooth, my e.l.f. Cosmetics Flawless Finish Foundation and my L’Oreal Pro-Glow and they all work beautifully using this technique. However, using my fingers to blend out my Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless didn’t work out as well, so some trial and error is required!
How I Apply Foundation With My Fingers
I apply a nickel-sized amount of foundation on my fingers, rub my fingers together to warm the foundation and then lightly press my fingers all over my face to get the foundation onto it.
Then, I begin to gently massage the foundation in, like I would a moisturizer, using light circular and swiping motions. Any leftover foundation after this point I’ll blend down into my neck.
Tip: For some extra glow, I like to add one or two drops of my Beauty Creations Primer Oil to the foundation before warming it between my fingers; it makes the foundation blend flawlessly and makes my skin look super healthy and radiant.
