Beauty and makeup trends come and go, and every year has its standout products and techniques. 2022 is no different, but it is unique because we are coming out of a period of staying at home. The opportunities to dress up and sparkle have been limited during this period, to say the least. I personally went MONTHS without touching any of my makeup, which was totally depressing and made me realize how much I enjoyed makeup in my life! Consequently, there is a drive in 2022 to look better and feel better more than ever before.
I’m sure by now you’ve seen many of these makeup trends across social media and styled on celebrities or promoted by influencers. Here we dive into what some of these 2022 makeup trends mean and the tips and tricks we can suggest to pull them off like a pro. It seems bold is going to be best this year!
A Comeback For Lip Liner
Lip liner was huge in the 90’s – remember that horrid dark brown lip liner trend? But lip liner has made a big comeback in recent years because of its ability to enhance and better define the shape of the lips. 2022 is looking like the year for the bold, as the illusion of fuller lips is a beauty trend that is not disappearing any time soon. Apply your liner first for bolder lip colours or after you’ve applied your lipstick for lighter shades – either way, lip liner can help to make your pout look its best.
You can also use a lip liner to contour and highlight your lips for maximum plumping effect; apply a slightly darker lip liner shade to the outer parts of your lips and use a lighter shade in the centre to make that area pop even more. Glossy Skin
Glowing “glass” skin continues to be a skin care and makeup trend that celebrities and influencers can’t get enough of. Properly hydrating and moisturizing skin with skin plumping sheet masks, essences and dewy primers help skin look healthy and glossy. Using highlighter and shimmer shade add to this gorgeous makeup trend.
Bolder Lip Colours
While red lipstick has never gone out of style, 2022 demands even brighter, more bold colours than ever, because we’re all tired of having our lips covered up by masks in 2021 – right? Try a bright pink, a deep orange or maybe a soft lilac on your lips this year and make them take centre stage! Bright lips not only make your lips pop but instantly make you look more confident too.
Bright Blush and Vibrant Eyeliner
2022 brings us back to the 80’s and the love of blush. A statement blush shade will be the key to your look this year and is an opportunity to be experimental in an easier to implement way. Use brighter tones to align with the offering from social media and celebrities – turning to bright oranges, pinks and plums – depending on your skin tone.Try adding blush to the forehead, top of the nose and carried from the cheekbones right up to the temples (draped blush) for a fresh but sculpted look.
Equally, you will want to increase the boldness of your eyeliner too, or try a more graphic look when applying it. Swap your standard black eyeliner for a much bolder and brighter shade. You can also use bright eyeshadow as a coloured eyeliner – just add some setting spray to an angled eyeliner brush and dip into some of your colourful eyeshadows to get the same effect. Double-winged or graphic eyeliner techniques are also proving to be a powerful 2022 makeup trend that isn’t getting old. Full, Fluffy Brows
Have you noticed that brands everywhere are coming out with soap brow kits, brow glue, brow powders and brow pens? That’s because full, fluffy brows are all the rage because of the youthful appearance they bestow on your face. Gone are the pencil thin brows of the 90’s – instead, celebrities and influencers are focusing on a more “laminated” brow look (e.g. where your brows are held at a diagonal on your face and fully extended).
Start learning how to apply brow glue to keep your brows in place and put your tweezers away if you want to be part of the fluffy brow crowd. Suffer from sparse brows? Add Some Glitter
By now, you might be getting the impression that the trends for 2022 are bright, bold and playful. And you would be right. It is not about subtlety when using glitter in your makeup in 2022. While most people apply glitter to their eyelids only, consider adding some glitter to the centre of your lips to make them pop or on the high points of your cheeks. Missed body glitter? Well, it is back, baby! Add some to your collarbones or exposed shoulder to make your skin shine all day.

As with everything in current times, being yourself is more important than following trends. The bold and brash colours of 2022 are all about a celebration of coming out into the world and having fun while feeling comfortable. Experiment with your makeup shades and don’t be afraid to try new shades – you never know what you will come to love in your makeup drawer this year!
