What Is The Difference Between Concealer and Colour Correcting Concealers?

Concealers are used for extra coverage and brightening in makeup and are usually selected in the same colour or a shade lighter than your natural skin tone.

They are more pigmented as compared to colour correctors, and should look seamless when properly blended into the skin. Concealers also tend to have a thicker texture and consistency based on the coverage they provide.

Colour correctors come tinted in colours such as purple, peach, green, yellow or orange to cover skin discolourations. You need to know the colour of the discolouration you want to cover and the concealer shade that falls across that colour on the colour wheel to select the best colour corrector, which I discuss in more detail below.

What Is Colour Correcting In Makeup?

Colour correcting in makeup terms is the practice of using coloured concealers to cover skin discolourations you want to hide. This practice works on the basic principles of the colour wheel, because colours that are opposite of on another on the colour wheel will cancel each other out when applied on top of the other.

You should study your complexion and determine what areas need colour correction and what colours you are trying to cover before selecting the concealer you will need, which I cover below:

What Colour Covers Redness?

Red and green are opposite of each other on the colour wheel below; this means that if you suffer from redness from acne or inflammation, you would use a green concealer to cover the redness.

What Colour Cancels Sallowness/Yellow Tones?

Purple and yellow are opposite each other on the colour wheel, so you would select a purple-tinted concealer to cancel out any yellowness in the skin.

What Colour Cancels Darkness?

If you suffer from dark blue undereye discolouration, a pale pink will work on paler skin tones. A peach concealer will work on medium skin tones and an orange concealer would be perfect for covering this area on dark skin tones.

Purple discolourations are best covered by a yellow-tinted concealer.

What Colour Corrector Covers Hyperpigmentation?

If you have a light complexion and suffer from hyperpigmentation, a peach coloured concealer would be used to cover these areas.

How To Use A Colour Correcting Concealer

Unlike skin-tinted concealers that are used for brightening and applied after foundation, colour correcting concealers are meant to be applied before foundation.

Only apply small dabs of a colour correcting concealer where you need it, because they are super pigmented and can be too hard to properly blend out afterwards if over-applied.

It’s also super important to blend colour correcting concealers properly to ensure the foundation applied on top blends seamlessly and the colour doesn’t bleed through.

You can use a damp makeup sponge or a brush to blend these concealers, but fingers are also the perfect tool for blending concealer, so try each method and see what works best!
