I loooove watching interior design shows to get fresh home decor ideas for my home (which is always under renovation). So when I found “Dream Home Makeover” on Netflix – a reality design show featuring the wife and husband duo from the ever-growing Studio McGee design group, I just had to a do a home decor binge of their two seasons over the holidays.
While Studio McGee’s interior design style is quite modern (I prefer more classic decor), I still loved watching the room makeovers and design process of their classic, yet modern overhauls. They also shared some great tips and tricks on the show as well as on their Instagram account that will definitely help to dress up your space. You can also shop the Studio McGee collection at Target later in the post.

1. Add Some Personal Style
Decor elements and accents in the home help to showcase the things you enjoy as well as little bits of your personal style. These accents don’t have to be bold or large in size to make an impact and sometimes the smallest touch has the most meaning or great memories attached to it.
Layer your home with decorative objects that call to you, such as books with topics you enjoy, vases or sculptures that remind you of your travels or framed photos and mementos that bring back special memories.
Studio McGee also incorporated a lot of fun pinboards into their room makeovers, which are easy to update and change over time as life moves on and you find new home decor ideas to try out.
2. Mixing Furniture Pieces
It’s easy to buy an entire furniture set at the store and be done with the pieces in your room.
But instead, consider mixing different pieces of furniture that have similar aesthetics for a bit of character. It’s also a fun way to mix budget finds with more expensive pieces so you can keep your decor options open. You can view some of the eclectic decor pieces from Studio McGee at Target and get some inspiration!
3. Don’t Be Afraid Of Bold Colours
Studio McGee founder Shea uses A LOT of white in her designs, but she’s also not afraid of bolder, darker colours to make a different kind of statement.
Use a deeper paint shade on a feature wall or consider dark kitchen cabinets instead of the usual bright whites and light grays. For impact, use lighter colours or bright metallics to act as accents in contrast to darker shades.
4. Add Some Greenery
Florals and plants are a fixture in the Studio McGee decor handbook and are a great way to bring colour and texture to your tabletop, mantle or that empty corner that needs a little “something”.
The budget friendly option would be to head outdoors and cut a few branches or stems from your local flora to dress up an oversized vase. You can also invest in a larger potted plant if you have a green thumb.
If you’re a regular plant killer, there are a lot of faux greenery options too, so don’t worry!
5. Mixing Styles
Modern vs. classic? Partners often don’t have the same styles, so understanding that a little mixing of decor styles isn’t a deal breaker is important.
Studio McGee recommends finding the right balance whenever you mix decor styles and share this tip in the Studio McGee Target collection.
Finding a common thread and layering different style pieces is a great way to mix styles together but still achieve a cohesive look.
6. Styling A Built-In
Built-ins are a great way to showcase decor pieces and Studio McGee has built-in styling steps down pat.
The formula? Start with empty shelves, take inventory of what you’re going to be adding, group everything by size, add larger items first for grounding and then move on to the smaller items to fill in the gaps. Just don’t overcrowd things!
Stand back and re-assess and re-arrange if needed.

7. Natural Woods + Wicker Create Warmth
Mixing natural wood and wicker pieces into a space with clean, neutral decor is a great way to bring texture and warmth to a space.
Some wood cutting boards on a counter or oversized wicker baskets on the floor are staples in the Studio McGee decor book and their Target collection as well.
8. Add Some Art
Hung artwork is a great way to show more of your personality in your home while dressing up some wall space.
The right piece of art can also bring more height to a lower ceiling, add a bold pop of colour to make a statement or add texture to liven up a neutral space.
Studio McGee is all about finding artwork to finish off a room and they have some great art hanging tips here.
9. Gold Metallics Are So Hot Right Now
A common thread in the Studio McGee Instagram feed is the pop of gold metallics throughout the team’s design projects – which I love! – and already have in my home.
From gold kitchen hardware, light fixtures, decor accents and more, gold has made a serious comeback in the design world and I’m all for it.
