What Are The Benefits of Facial Massage? Glad you asked…

Besides feeling amazing, facial massage is great for:

  • Increasing blood flow and oxygen to the skin, which promotes collagen production
  • Increasing the absorption of skin care products
  • Creating a natural flush and glow to the cheeks
  • Promoting lymphatic drainage
  • Reducing puffiness and slimming down facial features
  • Brightening the complexion
  • Reducing fine lines
  • Reducing sinus pressure
  • Relief of facial tension and stress for DIY self care

Facial massage is a great way to wind down at the end of a long day and relax your face. Or, throw in a quick facial massage or toning session to glow up before a special event. Personally, I love facial massage for slimming my lower cheek area/jowls and de-puffing the undereye area. I’ve also noticed that my upper eyelids have become less hooded and heavy over time through massage.

Did you know? Facial massage is a must for many celebrities before a red carpet event to get some serious glow while reducing puffiness.

Can You Do A Facial Massage Every Day?

Yes, gentle facial massage is safe to do daily and is a great way to obtain all the benefits stated above for the over 40 muscles in your face. However, you will get a bit of redness on your face depending on how much pressure you apply, so keep that in mind if you plan to do a more intense massage before going out, especially if you are prone to redness.

Tools For Facial Massage

The easiest way to do a DIY facial massage is with clean hands and fingertips. However, there are additional tools that are made for facial massage and can provide additional skin care benefits (and most of them are available on Amazon!):

  1. Rose Quartz Roller: Rose quartz rollers are popular facial massage tools that help reduce puffiness, promote lymphatic drainage, and improve circulation. They typically feature two roller heads, one for larger areas like the cheeks and forehead, and a smaller one for the under-eye area.
  2. Jade Roller: Similar to rose quartz rollers, jade rollers are made from jade stone and offer similar benefits for the skin. They are known for their cooling effect and are great for reducing inflammation and tightening the skin.
  3. Gua Sha Tool: Gua sha tools are flat, smooth stones (often made of jade or rose quartz) used to massage and scrape the skin. They help stimulate circulation, release tension, and promote lymphatic drainage, resulting in a brighter and more sculpted complexion.
  4. Facial Cupping Set: Facial cupping sets typically include small silicone cups that can be used to massage and suction the skin. Facial cupping helps improve circulation, reduce puffiness and tone the skin, leaving it looking rejuvenated and refreshed. I’m dying to grab a set for myself, they create some serious facial glow!
  5. Facial Ice Roller: Facial ice rollers are handheld tools filled with gel or water that can be frozen and used to massage the skin. They help reduce inflammation, soothe irritation, and tighten pores, making them great for depuffing and refreshing the skin.
  6. Microcurrent Facial Toning Device: Microcurrent facial toning devices use low-level electrical currents to stimulate facial muscles and tighten the skin. They help improve facial contouring, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and enhance the overall appearance of the skin. I love the ZIIP Halo and the FOREO BEAR mini.
  7. Silicone Facial Cleansing Brush: While not strictly a massage tool, silicone facial cleansing brushes can be used to massage the skin while cleansing. They help remove impurities, exfoliate the skin, and promote circulation, leaving it clean, smooth, and radiant. My favourite is the FOREO Luna mini 3 but Amazon has cheaper options as well (like this one).
  8. Pulsing T-Massager: On of my favourite tools, this gold vibrating massager feels amazing on the stress points of the face (e.g. between the eye brows and around the eyes) and helps to slim my cheeks with its pulsing feature.

How To Prepare the Skin for Massage

Clean your face, apply your skin care as usual and complete your routine with a facial oil. The oil will help your fingertips/massage tools glide over the skin easily without pulling or irritation. A moisturizer that has a lot of slip to it can also work.

NOTE – do not apply facial oil before using a microcurrent device – they usually require a special gel to pass the microcurrent through the skin properly.

Massage Techniques To Contour The Face

Apply your favorite facial oil or moisturizer, put on some soothing music and read up on all the easy facial massage techniques below to learn how to slim your face:

  1. Jawline Sculpting: Using your fingertips, gently massage along your jawline in upward and outward motions. Apply firm pressure as you move from your chin towards your ears to help define and contour your jawline.
  2. Cheekbone Lift: Start at the apples of your cheeks and use your fingertips to massage in circular motions towards your temples. This helps stimulate circulation and promotes lymphatic drainage, reducing puffiness and sculpting your cheekbones.
  3. Forehead Smoothing: Place your fingertips in the center of your forehead and massage outward towards your hairline, using gentle sweeping motions. This helps relax the muscles in your forehead and smooth out any tension lines.
  4. Eye De-Puffer: Gently tap your ring fingers around your eye area, starting from the inner corners and moving outwards towards your temples. This helps reduce puffiness, dark circles, and under-eye bags, leaving you looking bright-eyed and refreshed.
  5. Nasolabial Fold Smoothing: Using your thumbs, massage along the nasolabial folds (the lines that run from your nose to the corners of your mouth) in upward motions. This helps improve circulation and minimize the appearance of smile lines.
  6. Double Chin Eraser: Place both thumbs under your chin and use upward strokes to massage towards your ears. This helps tighten and tone the muscles in your neck and jawline, reducing the appearance of a double chin.
  7. Lip Plumping: Gently pinch and massage your lips with your fingertips to boost circulation and enhance natural lip color. You can also use a lip balm or oil to moisturize and plump up your pout.
  8. Neck and Décolletage Massage: Don’t forget to extend the love to your neck and chest area! Use upward strokes to massage from your collarbones up towards your jawline, helping to firm and smooth the skin.
  9. Overall Relaxation: Finish off your facial massage routine with some soothing strokes to relax your facial muscles and promote overall relaxation. Close your eyes, take deep breaths, and enjoy the moment of self-care.

Glow Up Tip: Apply a sheet mask to hydrate and plump the skin and gently roll a jade roller over the mask to boost absorption and relax tired facial muscles.

Facial massage is a great DIY method of slimming down your face that won’t break the bank and feels amazing.

Incorporate these facial massage techniques into your daily skin care routine for a pampering experience that’s sure to leave you feeling fabulous inside and out.
