Highlighter is a Godsend for anyone looking for some extra shimmer in their complexion. Whether it’s adding some extra glam for a night out or a soft glow on otherwise matte skin, highlighter has really become a makeup game changer over the last few years.
There are a few different ways to use and apply highlighter, so today’s post is all about making the most of this makeup treasure and helping you hit pan faster, because there’s always a new highlighter that you just “need” to have in your life, right?

1. Enhance Your Facial Features
Highlighter is great for bringing out the facial features you want to draw attention to. My favourite place to apply highlighter is along the tops of my cheekbones and up and around the outside of my eye area.
Looking to enhance your lips? You can do it by applying highlighter above your cupid’s bow or by tapping some onto your lipstick, focusing it on the centre of your lips to enhance your pout.
Want to make your eyes look larger? Applying a bit of highlighter to your inner corner and/or along the brow bone can really help. A bit of shimmer on the lids is also a great way to open up your peepers and look more awake in a pinch.
Alternatively, if you’re looking to hide an imperfection like a larger nose or long chin, these are NOT the places you’re going to want to highlight.

2. Don’t Forget Your Body!
Ok, so you’ve added some glow to your face, but shouldn’t your body be glowing to match? The answer is yes! So if you’re not using highlighter on your body, you’re missing out on another opportunity to get glowing.
Wearing an off the shoulder top? Highlighter is great for giving your collar bones and shoulders a gorgeous glow.
Showing off your gams? Dust some highlighter along the front of your legs and blind anyone who looks at them.
For an extra pop of shimmer, apply a body oil or lotion before applying your highlighter and turn yourself into a glowing goddess.

3. Setting Spray + Highlighter = Mega Glow
If you want to enhance any highlighter that you’re using, apply a few spritzes of your favourite setting spray onto your skin and before it completely dries and apply your highlighter on top. Blinding!
You can also mist on a hydrating facial toner like the Thayers Witch Hazel Rose Petal Toner as a setting spray – it works the same way!

4. Work The Highlighter In
This tip applies to powder highlighters and is something I learned from Melissa Alatorre’s YouTube channel.
When brushing on your highlight, make sure to really work your brush over the area you are highlighting to bring out the shimmer and disperse the product to avoid buildup or heaviness.
Some highlighters have a more intense glow when they are thoroughly brushed and worked into the skin, so apply a bit of elbow grease and get your glow on.

5. Use Liquid Highlighter As A Primer Or Mixed Into Your Foundation
Liquid highlighters don’t have to be applied to your face after foundation – be creative!
Liquid highlighters are great for adding a touch of glow to your face before foundation; just apply the liquid highlighter to the high points of the face that you want to bring out, like you would a moisturizer, and apply your foundation on top for that “glowing from within” look we’re all lusting after.
You can also try adding a drop or two of liquid highlighter into your foundation (mix them together on the back of your hand first!) and apply the mixture to your face for a gorgeous glass-skin look.

6. Used As A Blush Or Bronzer Topper
If you’re looking to bump up the glow factor of your matte blushes or bronzer, simply swipe a touch of some powder highlight on top for instant radiance.
To avoid modifying the bronzer/blush shade go for a more translucent cream highlighter stick, like the Chanel Baume Essentiel highlighter stick in “Transparent”.
