I picked up a few products from Indeed Laboratories after falling in love with their inDefense30 Dual Action SPF Moisturizer* (it’s miraculous for oily skin!) and the infamous Nanoblur made it into my little brand-focused beauty haul.
Nanoblur has been a best-selling product for Indeed Laboratories, but what is it and how does it work? And more importantly, did it work for me?

What’s It Supposed To Do?
Nanoblur uses its Nano-Optic Prism Complex (light diffusion) as well as dimethicone to blur fine lines, large pores, blemishes and crow’s feet. It promises to leave a silky smooth, matte canvas on the skin and it’s supposed to do all this in 40 seconds with only a pea-sized amount for the entire face – nice!
Basically, Nanoblur claims to be an Instagram filter in a tube.
It’s also free from parabens and any added fragrance.
How To Apply Nanoblur (This Is Important!)
Nanoblur can be applied several different ways:
- mixed into your moisturizer – especially recommended if you have dry skin
- without makeup, by being patted onto moisturized skin, or
- with makeup by patting it onto foundation and/or worn under loose powder
- as a spot treatment to reduce shine in certain areas (works better than powder! Amazing!)
- mixed into your foundation
Now, I say that the method of application is important because I didn’t bother reading the instructions and mistakenly applied Nanoblur before my foundation like I would a primer – because who has time to read instructions? – and it made my foundation clump like crazy. One day I will learn to read the instructions first, I promise…
So…Does It Work?
After finally reading the instructions and looking up some videos on how to apply Nanoblur on YouTube as well – I tried several methods:
- I tried patting Nanoblur on top of my foundation with a damp makeup sponge – I didn’t find that it did much for me when applied this way and it looked cakey – FAIL!
- I tried mixing Nanoblur into my moisturizer – this worked very well and gave me a smooth, blurred, mattifying effect – SCORE!
- I tried mixing Nanoblur into my foundation – this worked very well and gave me a smooth, blurred, mattifying effect – BINGO!
Overall, the effectiveness of Nanoblur depends on how I apply it. Initially, when I applied it on top of my foundation, I didn’t notice much difference in my skin; it also seemed to make my under-eye concealer cake up and made this area look more crepey than usual – no thanks. As a result, I initially hated Nanoblur and the first draft of this review took a turn for the worst…
Luckily, I’m very persistent (or stubborn?) and after trying all the methods listed above, I found mixing a half-pea-sized amount of Nanoblur into my foundation or into my moisturizer was the best option for me – it definitely helped blur my pores, smoothed out my skin and as a plus, kept my oil at bay for hours!
Honestly, Nanoblur cut my oil and shine by the day’s end at least in half, so I’m looking forward to this mattifying effect during the greasy/sweaty summer months when my skin shines bright like a diamond. Even better, the shine reduction didn’t leave my skin looking super matte or dull, but really healthy and radiant instead (although this will also depend on whether you apply a radiant or matte foundation on top). It also allowed my highlighters to do some of the glowing and shining instead of my oil.

If you’re looking for something to help mattify your skin all day and blur imperfections, Nanoblur is a great option! Just be prepared to try a few different application methods first before you decide if you like it.
Given how mattifying Nanoblur is, I wouldn’t recommend it for dry skin, unless used sparingly or mixed with a good moisturizer.
