Have you heard? The Ordinary’s Soothing and Barrier Support Serum is the latest release from the affordable skin care brand from Deciem.

What does The Ordinary Barrier Support Serum do?

This serum is formulated with a blend of ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol – key components of our skin’s natural barrier. An unhealthy skin barrier can lead to dryness, redness, sensitivity, and can make conditions like eczema worse. This serum aims to replenish and strengthen the barrier, leaving skin feeling soothed, hydrated, and more resilient.

This serum is also alcohol free, gluten free, vegan, silicone free and cruelty free.

The brand claims that this serum can strengthen the skin barrier in 2 hours, while giving an immediate 86% boost in skin hydration that lasts all day – that’s a bold claim!

Who should use The Ordinary Barrier Support serum?

  • Skin types with damaged skin barriers: This includes those with dry, sensitive, red or irritated skin.
  • Skin types experiencing dryness due to harsh treatments, like retinoids, exfoliants and chemical peels.
  • Anyone looking to improve overall skin health and hydration. The Ordinary Soothing and Barrier Support Serum works for all skin types!

How Does The Ordinary Barrier Support Serum feel and smell?

  • Texture: This gorgeously pink serum has a unique, lotion-like consistency with a hint of creaminess to it. It feels lightweight and absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving a greasy residue or feeling heavy or tacky. The brand refers to the texture of this serum as an “emulsion.”
  • Scent: It’s fragrance-free, which is a big plus for sensitive skin types.

What’s in this pink soothing serum?

Key ingredients in this soothing serum include:

  • Centella Asiatica Phytotechnologies: Known as “tiger grass” or “cica”, it’s a powerful antioxidant that soothes inflammation and redness promotes wound healing, and stimulates collagen production for firmer skin. Phytotechnologies refers to plant-based compounds with beneficial effects on the skin. These can include antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and skin-soothing agents.
  • Ceramides: Essential lipids that form the building blocks of your skin’s barrier. They help retain moisture, prevent water loss, and protect against irritants.
  • 2% Niacinamide: A multi-tasking ingredient that brightens skin tone, minimizes pores, reduces redness, and improves skin barrier function.
  • Vitamin B12: Reduces dryness and redness and gives this serum its Barbie-pink tint.
  • Gallic Acid Derivatives: Helps soothes the appearance of irritated skin and reduce the look of redness.
  • Bisabolol: Calms look of redness and soothes the skin.
  • Ginger Root Extract: Possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help soothe irritated skin and protect against environmental damage.

This is one of The Ordinary’s pricier serums because it has a more extensive ingredient list for maximum benefits.

Does this Barrier Support Serum actually work?

Personally, my skin runs a bit oily and I don’t often get dry patches. However, I love applying this serum after I’ve done an exfoliating peel (like The Ordinary AHA BHA Peeling Solution, which I love!) or I’ve applied my 1% retinol treatment.

It’s the perfect serum to soothe and calm skin and it offers lightweight hydration without being greasy. It’s also a lovely serum to take care of my skin during the harsh, winter months when my skin gets a bit drier or suffers from redness. I use this serum 2-3 times per week for some skin care TLC when my skin needs some extra love and I’m enjoying it.

Can you use The Ordinary Barrier Support Serum with retinol??

Yes!! I love applying this serum after I use retinol from instant soothing, or you can mix your retinol serum into this serum to buffer the irritating effects of retinol.

If you suffer from redness, inflammation, dryness and irritation, this pink serum may help!
