Silk’n Flash & Go Laser Hair Removal Device

Is there anything more annoying than excess face and body hair? To this day, I can’t understand why Evolution hasn’t taken care of this problem for us women.

Isn’t the constant removal of facial and body hair enough to say “Hey Evolution, us women really don’t want or need all this hair – take care of it already!”

But seriously, I’ve been using the Silk’n Flash & Go Laser Hair Removal Device for over a year now and it’s become one of my most prized beauty tools.

Effective, affordable and easy to use. And what else could be better than sitting at home on a Friday night and removing some stubble?

How Permanent Is Laser Hair Removal?

First off, I wanted to talk briefly about laser hair removal and some myths out there. Laser hair removal is touted as a permanent solution to hair re-growth, but this isn’t exactly accurate.

In truth, the results of laser hair removal can vary from person to person and may change over time. Some people will have great results, with minimal to no hair growing back after treatment, while others may have stubborn hairs that just refuse to die, like some of mine.

I’ve had professional laser hair removal treatments on my PCOS-induced facial hair over 10 years ago with pretty good results.

While the majority of the thick, black hair disappeared, I still have some hair that grows in thinner and lighter (I use my Tinkle razor to remove these), while a few stubborn black ones still grow in on my chin.

Hormonal conditions (like PCOS) or changes in hormones over time due to pregnancy, menopause or medications can also affect the results of laser hair removal (e.g previously removed hair may grow back).

So far, electrolysis is the only truly permanent form of hair removal. Now, I’m not saying this to deter you from trying laser hair removal, but I think it’s only fair to be honest about its abilities to permanently remove hair.

Is It Worth Getting Laser Hair Removal?

This is a personal question that everyone must consider individually. Professional laser hair removal sessions are roughly $200 or more per session depending on the area you are treating and how big the area is. You also need to consider that you will need 4 or more sessions to remove hair in the area you are treating and may have to attend additional maintenance sessions to remove more stubborn hair.

Purchasing an at-home laser hair removal device like the Silk’n Flash & Go that doesn’t require replacement cartridges is significantly cheaper than professional laser hair removal.

If you have a lot of hair to remove on your body, laser hair removal is a great choice to get permanent hair removal for the most part, with some hair growing back much thinner and lighter than before. In terms of how effective laser hair removal is, it’s considered more effective than waxing and much less painful and messy.

How Many Sessions of Laser Hair Removal Do You Need?

The exact number of maintenance laser treatments varies by individual. According to the Mayo Clinic, most people need between four and six laser therapy sessionsYou also need to space these out by six weeks per session to allow the next hair growth cycle to start; this means that the full treatment cycle can take up to nine months.

Hair grows in three different stages: growing, resting and shedding. For treatments to work hair needs to be zapped in the growth stage. But because all of the hair isn’t in the same stage at the same time, multiple treatments are needed.

How Does The Silk’N Flash & Go Laser Hair Remover Work?

The Silk’N Flash & Go is a FDA-approved at home laser hair removal device that is relatively painless, affordable and easy to use. Flash & Go uses “Home Pulsed Light Technology”, which is absorbed by pigment in the hair shaft and transformed into heat to reduce hair re-growth with continued treatment. Below is a video explaining this process:

Flash & Go has five strength levels, (level 1 being the weakest, 5 being the strongest) and is pre-loaded with up to 300,000 pulses of laser hair removal fun, meaning you don’t have to worry about buying replacement cartridges (although I’m pretty hairy, so I might get through all these pulses…).

Simply place the glass rectangle (pictured further below) over the (shaved) are you want to treat, press the button that operates the laser and it will release a “pulse” or flash of light. The sensor must be fully covered for the laser to activate and it also automatically adjusts the laser to work with your skin tone. Continue moving and activating the laser over each area of hair that you want to treat and DO NOT treat the same area more than once.

According to Board-certified dermatologist Jessica Weiser, M.D, many people tend to over-do at home laser hair removal- “Typically people at home tend to be aggressive with themselves because they think that they can get a faster, better result without realizing potential consequences.”

The Silk’N Flash & Go is made for hair removal on people with light to medium skin tones only. It comes with an awesome storage bag, an AC cord adapter and two European adapters, just in case you want to bring your Silk’N with you when traveling.

The new technology is two times faster than that of the original Silk’N model (which I also own) and allows you to treat your stubborn facial and body hair in the comfort of your own home.

That means you can crack open a bag of chips, watch some Real Housewives and make yourself hair-free at the same time!

Do You Shave Before Laser Hair Removal?

Yes, should shave a day or two before your laser hair removal treatment. Shaving mildy exfoliates the skin and leaves skin a bit irritated, so I avoid shaving the same day that I have my laser hair removal session.

How To User The Silk’n Flash & Go

Having PCOS and Italian genes means that hair removal is a necessity for me before leaving the house. As mentioned, I’ve had professional laser hair removal on my face, but continue to treat the stubborn hairs there that refuse to die with the Silk’N Flash & Go.

I also use the Silk’N to reduce hair growth on my forearms, underarms, bikini line and legs (below the knee, haven’t gotten above the knee yet). I should also mention that I’m super fair, so my skin tone works well with the Silk’N.

The Flash & Go is super easy to use and the design of the device makes it easy to press the trigger button that activates the device while gliding the Flash & Go over the area I’m treating.

It’s also much faster, quieter, cheaper and smaller than the original Silk’N that I purchased about nine years ago. The original Silk’N cost me around $800 and required replacement cartridges ($100 for 3 cartridges). Don’t miss buying those one little bit.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful? Does The Silk’n Flash & Go Work?

Since the Silk’N is for at home use, it isn’t as strong as a professional laser. This means that it isn’t as painful as a professional laser treatment (yaaaas!), but the hair doesn’t fall out as quickly either (booo!).

Normally, a professional laser hair removal treatment would remove all of the treated hair within a week’s time, while hair treated with the Silk’N can take longer than a week to fall out, and some hair doesn’t fall out at all and will need another treatment.

This is why if I win the lottery I plan to invest in my own professional laser hair remover…a girl can dream….

In terms of pain, I don’t really find the Flash & Go to cause me any discomfort, unless I’m doing my bikini line. I use the highest setting, level 5, for all my treatments. I would describe each laser pulse feeling like a flash of warmth on the skin – not uncomfortable at all. I should also mention that the treated hair grows back slower and thinner, similar to waxing.

At home laser hair removal is super convenient, but can be time consuming. Treating a large area like my lower legs takes about 15-20 minutes (which is a long time for someone with two kids and zero free time), and the treatment needs to be repeated to get all the hair that doesn’t fall out or continues to grow back.

I’ve done several treatments on this area and still have stubborn patches of sadistic hair that keeps coming back for more. That being said, about 85% of my lower legs are hair-free now and super soft. No more rough stubble or cuts all over my ankles and knees from a razor.

It’s a miracle! I’m planning to do my thighs as well, but those will definitely take a lot more time. On the bright side, treating smaller areas is much less time consuming. Areas like my face, underarms and forearms are a lot faster to do here and there, and I’m very happy with the results.

I’ve been using the Silk’N along my bikini line as well, and although it’s a little more painful in certain spots, I am definitely not missing the stubble!

In Closing…

…I feel that the person who invented laser hair removal should receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Just my opinion….

I love the Silk’N Flash & Go and am glad I grabbed it. While I still have areas to treat, I am super happy with the hair-free areas I have so far and I like that I can use it at home wherever and whenever I need to without having to pay hefty salon prices. Given I have such thick, stubborn black body hair, I never thought I would know the joy of being hairless and smooth in my lifetime.

The Silk’N Flash & Go is probably one of my most coveted beauty tools that I would not be able to survive on a deserted island without – assuming this island has electricity, of course.
