Sitting in an office job all day and hunching over my computer means I get a lot of tension in my upper back and shoulders. Yes, I would love to book a massage for myself, but I rarely make the time for it and barely have the energy or desire to leave the house when I have a day off.
So when I was offered the chance to review the Ohuhu Touchscreen Tens Unit Muscle Stimulator from Amazon, you can understand that it was an offer I couldn’t refuse…
Note: While I loved this device, it is no longer offered on Amazon, but I have linked to similar devices that you can browse on Amazon that work in the same way and have the same features.

What Is The Ohuhu Tens Unit Muscle Stimulator, Anyways?
The Ohuhu Tens Unit is a recharcheable FDA-cleared electric muscle stimulator machine for muscle pain relief and at-home massage therapy. The rechargeable touchscreen remote is hooked up to two conductive wires that each attach to two conductive pads.
A mild electrical current is then conducted through the pads; this current stimulates the muscles to gently contract and also stimulates blood flow to the treated area to promote healing and relaxation while at home, work or away.
The unit comes with 10 self-adhesive, conductive pads that can be used on your arms, legs, back, shoulders, butt or waist. Only 4 pads can be hooked up to the remote and used on your body at one time.
There are 12 different massage settings to choose from and the intensity of each setting for each wire can be adjusted up to 10 intensity levels using the touchscreen remote or the side buttons on the remote.
The massage settings are created to mimic a number of massage types and treatments, which you can view below:
The unit includes a rechargeable lithium battery that claims 10 hours of use before needing to recharge and also includes a storage bag and an acupuncture placement point chart so you can pinpoint how to best treat different parts of the body for optimal relief.

How It Works
You can place up to four of the self-adhesive pads on your body during a session at one time (you cannot use these pads on the sides of your neck or your head).
The pads easily adhere to clean, dry skin (avoid using any oils in the treatment area for best adhesion) with the self adhesive that is on the back of them. While the pads feel super sticky to the touch, they are easily removed and don’t leave any stickiness or residue behind on your skin, I promise!
Each pair of pads are then attached to cords that connect to the touchscreen remote through port A or port B. Once turned on, you can select a massage mode and increase or decrease the intensity of stimulation for side A or B using the touchscreen controls or side buttons.
The unit has a default timer of 20 minutes but you can adjust the timer as needed anywhere from 10-60 minutes.

After Shocks…Did It Work?
As terrifying as it was to try out at first, I really enjoy using this unit!
I’ve always wondered how these muscle stimulators worked and although a part of me was a little hesitant to actually turn it on – electricity scares me, so I tried it on my husband first! – it’s super easy to use and not painful at all (unless you jack up the intensity and shock the monkey, of course).
I love using this muscle stimulator on my upper back and shoulder blades; as I mentioned earlier in the post, I tend to hunch in my office chair most of the day when I type, so I have mild pain between my shoulder blades most of the time.
I like to use this tens unit for a 20-minute session on my upper back while catching up on Instagram or watching a YouTube makeup tutorial, all while the steady current pulses and vibrates deep into my muscles to relieve tension.
Of the 12 massage settings, my favourite setting is the first one, which is actually created to massage the lower back; it has a nice vibrating and rippling sensation to it that gradually intensifies.
In terms of intensity, I’ve started off slowly at level 1 and increased it to level 3 comfortably on this setting.
My husband suffers from chronic lower back pain, so I’ve also tested this out on him and he finds it relaxing as well, although he still prefers a deep tissue massage by hand. We’ll usually fight over who gets to use it when we finally get into bed after tucking in the kids for the night!
It’s recommended that you don’t share the pads that you use, so I’ve labelled which ones I use so as not to get them confused with my husband’s.
