What’s So Great About Powdered Vitamin C?
The Ordinary’s 100% L-Ascorbic Acid Powder is a high concentration of vitamin C in powdered form. This fine 325 mesh topical powder is 100% active and not diluted in any way – unlike most vitamin C serums. This means you get direct exposure to high concentrations of vitamin C whenever you use it. The super small particle size of the powder also means it dissolves into other skin care products more easily.
Besides having a more potent vitamin C option at your fingertips, this powder also lasts longer than its liquid serum counterparts, which can quickly expire when exposed to UV light. Even better, the powder comes with a 1/4 teaspoon plastic scoop that you can use to pick up as much or as little of the powder as you like – making it easy to adjust how much vitamin C you apply; this custom dosing is especially important to sensitive skin types or skin types that cannot tolerate too much vitamin C.
This powder is formulated for all skin types (adjust the amount you use as tolerated) and is cruelty free, gluten free, vegan, silicone free, nut free and alcohol free. The Ordinary 100% L-Ascorbic Acid Powder sells for $5.80 Canadian for 20 grams of powder and is packaged in a UV protected glass jar.

Why You Should Incorporate Vitamin C Into Your Skin Care Routine
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that:
- reduces inflammation and acne scarring
- promotes healthy collagen production for better skin strength and elasticity
- reduces hyper-pigmentation and dark spots
- repairs UV damage
- evens out and brightens skin tone
- promotes firmer, smoother skin
- shields skin from the impacts of pollution and free radicals
- more effectively protects against sunburn if applied before sun exposure.
In conclusion, vitamin C can pretty much do everything but clean your house, so it’s a great ingredient to have in your skin care army. Find out more about how vitamin C powder can improve your skin in this Age Defying informative post.
How To Use The Ordinary L-Ascorbic Acid Powder
As mentioned earlier, this powder comes with a small plastic scoop and the powder should be mixed into your other skin care products before you apply it to your skin. This means you can mix the powder into your hydrating toners, essences, serums or moisturizers – as long as they don’t already contain vitamin C (too much can be irritating). Don’t add the powder to your exfoliating toner either – the potential for irritation is way too high!
L-Ascorbic Acid can be applied to the skin morning or night.
What Should You Mix Vitamin C Powder With?
Vitamin C powder is best mixed with a watery serum or lightweight lotion. I like to add the powder into a liquid hydrating toner or gel, such as the Hadalabo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Lotion, which as a gel-based lotion. Another great mixing option is adding the powder into a liquid toner, such as the Klairs Supple Preparation Toner. You can also add this vitamin C powder into your favourite water-based moisturizer for an instant anti-oxidant boost.
Tip: I would avoid mixing this powder with any oil-based products, as the powder may not dissolve as easily.
When do I use it? In the morning – I’ve wanted to incorporate vitamin C into my morning routine for a while, but my Kiehl’s Vitamin C concentrate (which I love in my evening routine) is a touch greasy at first and I don’t have time to wait for it to totally sink into my skin in the mornings.
But unlike the Kiehl’s serum, The Ordinary’s L-Ascorbic powder and I get along perfectly in the mornings. When mixed with my hydrating gel, it dissolves quickly into my skin and does not pill or build up in any way. I wear it under my Biore UV Aqua Rich SPF50 and under my makeup and have zero issues with it.
How do I apply it? I like to use this L-Ascorbic Acid Powder in the morning by adding a 1/4 scoop of it into the palm of my hand and then adding: a nickel-sized amount of my Hadalabo Gokujyun Hyaluronic acid lotion (love this stuff!) and 1-2 drops of The Ordinary’s Matrixyl 10% serum (another repurchased serum – love!). After lightly rubbing this mixture together in my palms, I add this powder-gel concoction to my face and massage it in.
A tingling sensation during the first 1-2 weeks of use is normal as your skin builds up tolerance to the product. If stinging continues, use less of the powder or mix in more skin care products with it to buffer the stinging effect.
Don’t use more than a 1/4 scoop – L-Ascorbic powder is strong and too much will irritate your skin, especially at such a high concentration.
Any Negatives of Vitamin C Powder?
Many skin care gurus will point out that mixing a powder into your skin care can make it tricky to ensure you get just the right amount of powder needed, especially since you need to estimate what a 1/4 scoop is for yourself (not sure why The Ordinary didn’t just provide a scoop that was the right size?). In general, skin care products also need a certain pH level to work most effectively, so mixing this powder into your skin care means that you will be unsure as to whether you have achieved the correct pH level for your vitamin C to work effectively. For these reasons, dermatologists are the biggest fans of skin care powdered products – FYI.
How The Ordinary Vitamin C Powder Works For Me
This vitamin C powder has quickly become one of my most favourite skin care products over the last couple months. It allows me to get all the benefits of pure, undiluted vitamin C in my morning skin care routine and is super easy to use. Skin improvements? My skin has been steadily improving since incorporating The Ordinary’s AHA +BHA Peel and has continued to improve since adding The Ordinary L-Ascorbic Acid Powder into my routine.
My pores are getting even smaller and my skin just looks noticeably plumper, smoother and healthier. Overall, I’ve been really happy with my skin in general lately and I believe that this vitamin C powder has a lot to do with it.
Does it sting? I got this question on my Instagram when I posted about this powder and the answer is yes – if I don’t add enough of my gels/serums into the mixture, it does sting a touch. If I notice any stinging, I’ll usually add another drop of my Hadalabo gel and massage it onto my face to buffer the stinging sensation, which then disappears.
TIP: For an antioxidant boost, add a drop or two of The Ordinary’s Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3% serum into the mix.

How Long Does It Take For Vitamin C To Work?
As with most skin care treatments, you will need to use it consistently for about 8-12 weeks to see the full benefits of the product, especially if you are using it to brighten dull skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots.
