Makeup Revolution: Soph x MUR Ultra Eye Shadow Palette & Guest List Palette

It took forever, but I’m finally finishing off the reviews from my Makeup Revolution haul by sharing my thoughts on the two eye shadow palettes I grabbed. In fact, this review took so long that the brand actually changed its name since my haul arrived and is now going by “Revolution Beauty.”

While the shades in these palettes are super pretty and perfect for the up and coming fall season (yaaaas! I love fall!), they did not come without some disappointment…

Soph x Makeup Revolution Ultra Eye Shadow Palette

The Soph x MUR palette immediately grabbed my attention, what with its stunning shades and matte/shimmer mix.

Everyone on Instagram and within the blogosphere was raving about this little number, so of course I just had to get it, because I apparently have no will power anymore.

Created with YouTuber SophDoesNails, this palette of 14 matte and 10 shimmer shades has a broad range of colours to take you from sultry neutral to bright and dramatic. It comes in a large plastic palette with a substantial mirror.

The matte shades in this palette are pretty good, but can be hit and miss. They’re super soft and easy to blend, but some have better pigment than others, with a few of the super dark shades being a bit patchy.

They don’t kick up a bunch of powder when you dip into them and I don’t get any fallout with them either.

The shimmers? They initially gave me a bit of trouble. The two lightest shimmers in the top row would barely swatch on my skin (third and fourth shadows in the pic below) and only gave off some decent pigment after I scraped off the top layer of them.

Most of the shimmers generally feel dry to the touch, although they’ve been getting softer and creamier with use, so not sure if just the top layer was a bit funky?

I recommend applying the shimmers with your finger or a wet brush to get the best payoff on the lid. Once you do see the pigment, they are stunning!

Especially the duo chrome shade “Petrol” that has a soft purple-gray-to-brown shift in the light, pictured on my lids below:

The shadows are swatched below, left to right, top row to bottom. In general, I found the top two rows more difficult to swatch.

As much as I love the shade selection, I’m a bit disappointed that these shadows seem to fade a bit. I find even when using my e.l.f. Cosmetics Shadow Lock eyelid primer, these shadows already look more muted by midday.

To be clear, they don’t disappear from my lid, but just don’t have the same intensity that they did when first applied.

Overall, I love the shade range of this palette and the looks I can get out of it, even though some shades need a bit more elbow grease to get just right.

I’ve been eyeing the follow up palette to this one by SophDoesNails (the Extra Spice palette) but I’ve imposed a bit of a palette ban on myself at the moment, so we’ll see how long that lasts…

Life On The Dance Floor “Guest List” Palette

Jumping onto the warm eye shadow bandwagon, the peach, pink and orange shades of the Guest List palette from the Life On The Dance Floor range immediately caught my eye.

This is another 24 shade palette with a matte and shimmer shade mix that in my opinion, out performs its SophDoesNails counterpart above.

The matte shades are super soft, pigmented and blendable, while the shimmer shades are soft and silky to the touch.

Again, I like to apply my shimmers with my fingers, but you can use a dry brush if you like and will still get some decent payoff. Shades are swatched below, left to right, top rows to bottom.

I think just from the swatches you can see that this palette has a better shadow formula than the Soph Ultra eye shadow palette above – sorry Soph, but it’s true.

These shades are intense and last all day on my eyes (with an eyelid primer) and are worth every penny of the roughly $21CAD I spent on it. Guest List comes in a hard rose gold and glitter encrusted plastic case with a huge mirror and will be on my lids into the fall season – it’s brilliant!
