For those of you that struggle to get up in the morning – like myself – creating an effective self care morning routine can mean the difference between a super rough start to your day and feeling like you can take on anything. Even morning people need a good self care morning routine to get things started on the right foot. Find out what you can do to enjoy some much deserved self care each day to clear your mind and awaken your energy.
1. Lighten Up
Looking at natural light first thing in the morning will help wake you up more naturally and can also help set your circadian rhythm to awaken at that time every day. Looking outside at nature also has a calming effect, especially if you have some beautiful greenery in your view.
If you wake up before sunrise, try using a light up alarm like this Wake Up Sunrise Alarm. This alarm turns on a dim light 5-10 minutes before your alarm goes off and gradually gets brighter to mimic morning light and gently wake you up.

2. Morning Skin Care
Regardless of whether it’s a rushed morning or a leisurely day in, I always start the day with a pamper session for my skin. The massage my face receives helps to boost circulation and wake me up at the same time while helping my skin look its best. When I really want a morning skin care treat, I throw on some eye patches or a sheet mask and enjoy the cooling sensation.

3. Drink Water
Your body hasn’t had any water all night and needs a good hydration boost to get things started right each morning. Have a tall glass of warm water to keep dehydration and headaches away before that morning cup of tea or coffee.
4. Freshly Brewed Coffee, Tea or Hot Cocoa
I never skip my coffee in the morning, so you know this has to be a self care step for me (and many others I’m sure). I’m a coffee lover at heart and the smell of a fresh brew is one of the few things that will entice me away from the warmth of my bed when the weather gets colder.
Take time to enjoy your coffee or tea while it’s still warm before taking on that long commute or settling into your home office. Just don’t rely on too much coffee or tea to get going in the mornings and be sure to drink your water first!

5. Write In A Journal
A great self care practice to try each morning is taking some time to write in a journal. Get out all your worries, emotions or that to-do list that you keep replaying in your mind – whatever it is you want to write about, journaling is a mindful self care tip that can help you focus each morning.
A great journal starter to try is writing 3-5 things that you are grateful for in your life; there are many times when we don’t want to get out of bed because we are feeling low, can’t stand our job or have a number of things worrying us. Focus on the things you enjoy in your life and take time each morning to be grateful for them.

6. Meditation
Meditation is a great way to clear your mind and declutter negative thoughts. It’s been shown to boost the immune system, lower blood pressure, relieve depression, increase productivity and promote creative thinking, as well as improve health, emotional well being, increase happiness, improve personal relationships.
Not sure where to start? Try a meditation app like Calm , which will guide you through meditative exercises that are personalized to your needs.
7. Stretch
Boost your circulation and warm up your joints with a 5 minute morning stretch or yoga routine. Relaxing stretches can help you focus on deeper breathing, which can relieve stress and help focus your thoughts on yourself and not all the needs of others around.

8. No Devices
I think it’s safe to say that we all spend a lot of time on some time of device during our day, whether it’s our mobile, tablet, tv or laptop. Book a period of time in the morning to get ready for your day without looking at any devices and enjoy some quiet time with your thoughts or a good book.
9. Feed Your Body
Enjoying a healthy breakfast that includes some carbs, protein, fruit and some healthy fat will get all your pistons firing and keep you fueled until you get your next break. I tend to skip breakfast when I’m commuting into work, which not only leaves me feeling crabby but makes me rely more on my morning coffee for energy. Coffee or tea can never replace a good breakfast and can leave you feeling foggy and slow.
10. Get Enough Sleep
Let’s be honest, if you want to jump out of bed in the morning without hitting the snooze, you need to get to bed early and get a solid night of sleep. Avoid devices 1 hour before bed, try and get into bed at the same time each night and prioritize your sleep over tv or Instagram.
